Bintan
Bintan Island or Negeri Segantang Lada is an island, and is also the biggest among the Riau Islands province of Indonesia. The capital of Bintan is the southwestern city of Tanjung Pinang.
The island has tropical forest and splendid white beaches. The highest mountain on the island is Bintan Besar (400m above sea level) which is the remains of an old volcano and is also considered to be the highest point on the Riau Island province.
Bintan grew to be politically important when Sultan Mahmud of the fallen Sultanate of Malacca fled to Bintan and created a resistance base there after Malacca was taken by the Portuguese forces in 1511. Eventually, the Portuguese took over the stronghold in 1526,
and a few years later, the Sultanate founded a new capital back on the Malay Peninsula and developed from there.
Bintan's power and central role as the stronghold and trading port slowly disappeared with the regional political changes. The island's past fortune is now overshadowed by the new glory of neighbouring islands.
There are several popular resorts and beach sites around Bintan island as well as local cities such as its capital, Tanjung Pinang, from which connecting local ferries to other islands in the archipelago can be found.
