Ubon Ratchathani is a city in the Kingdom of Thailand. Known as Ubon for short, the name means "Royal Land Lotus Blossom". With a population of over 100 thousand residents, the city was founded in the late 18th century
by Lao immigrants, with the support from the new Kingdom of Siam during that era.
Used As An Airbase During Vietnam War
During the Vietnam war, the city was used by the US as an airbase for launching bombing raids over the neighbouring Laos and Cambodia. The base is now an active Royal Thai Air Force Base, and a dual-use international airport, Ubon Ratchathani - Muang Ubon Airport, Thailand.
Candle Festival and Local Food
The Candle Festival is considered to be the largest religious ceremony in Ubon Ratchathani. It is celebrated yearly by the City on Asalha Bucha Day and Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent) Day. Ubon Ratchathani is also popular for local food prepared from freshwater fish, meat, Pla Sawai or Pla Tepho.
This kind of specialty is called "Khem Mak Nat."
