Peranakan Museum

The early Chinese settlers that settled in Southeast Asia and took Malay wives began what is known as the Peranakan Culture.

Although adopting many aspects of Malay cultures, they retained many old Chinese practices when compared to the later settlers including having large ancestral halls in their homes, unaffected by the changing political climate in China back then. Singapore, along with Melacca and Penang were the main hubs of the Peranakans.

Previously the Asian Civillisation Museum, the neo-classical building is converted to the new Peranakan Museum when the Asian Civillisation Mueseum shifted. The museum does not only focus on the cultures of the local Peranakans, but also the Peranakans of the region. It houses many quality cultural displays and provides interaction using different technologies and even food sampling.

  1. Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
