English in Singapore is prominently used in Singapore and is used in education, businesses, road signs and more. The English standard in Singapore is based primarily on British English with some American English influences. Colloquially, Singaporeans speak what is known as “Singlish” which is almost identical with the Malaysian variant. |
Singapore Colloquial English incorporate grammar and vocabulary from Malay and Indian languages, Mandarin and other regional Chinese speech. Although it can be unintelligible to foreigners, “Singlish” is used only in informal settings or when humour is intended.
As for Chinese, Singapore uses Simplified Chinese for writing and primarily uses Mandarin Chinese for speech. Other regional speech such as Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Hainanese and prominently Hokkien are also used in informal, non-official context.
The other 2 official languages apart from English and Chinese are Malay and Tamils. Other Indian languages are used in speech but infrequently.
Code-switching is not uncommon in Singapore. This is especially true with the majority Chinese population, who often code-switch between Chinese and English.
