If there is anything that Singaporeans are proud of, the answer will definitely be food.

The wide variety of food in Singapore reflects the culture diversity of Singapore. Local delights ranges from southern Indian food, Malay, different Chinese food, Peranakan which is a fusion between Malay and Chinese flavours, and even localized Western food.

Food in Singapore is never too far off from anyone.

One cannot say they have been to Singapore without visiting a hawker centre. Few can sum up the reasons like Patricia Schultz can.

Seafood are greatly enjoyed by Singaporean including shellfish, crabs, prawns, fish and sotong (squid in Malay).
Favourite seafood dishes includes:

  • sambal stingray - also known as ‘hang hir’ and ‘ikan bakar’, the stingray is usually barbequed in smothered in a hot and spicy chilli sauce known as sambal.
  • Chilli crab - Sri Lankan crabs cooked with tomato and chilli-based sauce.
  • Cereal Prawns - Whole fried prawns (usually tiger prawns) covered in sweetened oats.

Katong Laksa
Laksa - A Peranakan dish consisting of rice vermicilli in coconut-based curry, usually containing cockles, toufu puffs and grounded dried shrimps.
