The distinctive clock tower of Lau Pa Sat
Once formally known as Telok Ayer Market, Lau Pa Sat as it is called vernacularly by the locals, is now converted into a hawker centre, loved by both locals and foreigners alike. The term “Lau Pa Sat” literally means “Old Market”, a fitting name for it was the oldest market in Singapore.
Originally a market, it was converted in a hawker centre, then closed, reconstructed, converted into a festival market for tourist, and then back to a hawker centre throughout its lifetime.
While the area around Lau Pa Sat transformed into a modern commercial district complete with skyscrapers, it continues to retains its Victorian style, octagonal cast iron structure since 1879, unchanged by time.
